Newcastle University are asking all journeys to and from the University to be made sustainably.

There are many ways to commute to our campus and we want to support you in making the best choice for your circumstances. We support our colleagues and students to make sustainable travel choices by providing active travel facilities such as Dr Bike sessions and bicycle repair stands, we also offer travel schemes for public transport providers such as Nexus and Arriva.

Newcastle City Council is driven to creating a fairer greener and cleaner city, and are excited to support this initiative. They aim to support their residents in travelling actively and choosing healthier commuting.

This is a key aim for the council and their sustainability goals as they look to create a transport network that is efficient, safe, accessible and inclusive. 

Newcastle Hospitals is one of the busiest and largest NHS hospital trusts in the country. The trust has a strong history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, research and innovation regionally, nationally and internationally.

In 2019, they became the first healthcare organisation in the world to declare a climate emergency. They are working to improve air quality, and reduce carbon, from journeys associated with their delivery of care.

As a public transport provider, they’d love every day to be a car free day! Getting the Metro, bus or ferry, instead of taking the car, can be more convenient, cheaper and quicker, as well as better for the environment and your health too. 

For World Car Free Day, they’re encouraging motorists to give up their cars and choose public transport.  Give it a go – make a pledge to leave the car behind. 

Stagecoach are one of the UK’s largest bus operators, proudly connecting communities since 1980. They’ve been helping millions of people access work, education, healthcare, shopping, and leisure safely, reliably and affordably. From busy city streets to rural routes, their network plays a vital role in keeping the UK moving.

Stagecoach are encouraging residents to travel by means other than cars. This is a great chance for us to reflect on the small changes we could all make to help our planet.

Newcastle’s Business Improvement District, NE1 works to enhance the city centre through placemaking, events, and strategic partnerships. Funded by local businesses, they promote Newcastle as a vibrant, welcoming destination for commerce, culture, and community. 

Using their platform, they are engaging with the public on World Car Free Day and encouraging people to take the pledge to go Car Free!

Eldon Square, the shopping centre located in the centre of Newcastle, is a proud collaborator of Newcastle’s Car Free Day.

They encourage greener journeys by promoting walking, cycling, and public transport, helping reduce our collective carbon footprint. Together, they’re shaping a more sustainable shopping experience for everyone. 

Newcastle College is a further and higher education college, offering hundreds of vocational courses, degrees and apprenticeships to learners across the North East.

Newcastle College supports students in exploring sustainable commuting options, which aligns with the wider goals of World Car Free Day. One key initiative they have is that students aged 16-18 and joining Newcastle College may be eligible for a FREE travel pass.

Northumbria University is committed to promoting sustainable travel both across the North East and between their campus locations.

In support of World Car Free Day, they’re proud to highlight the initiatives they offer to encourage active travel. These include free Dr Bike sessions, guided rides, free security tagging and over 800 bicycle parking spaces across our campuses. By choosing to walk, cycle or use public transport, staff and students are helping to cut emissions, ease congestion, and create a cleaner, healthier city. 

Newcastle Airport is a responsible operator and works hard to ensure it is a good neighbour for both its local community and the region it serves.

The Airport’s environmental strategy includes an ambition to become Net Zero Carbon by the year 2035, a journey which has already begun. The airport is supporting the city wide initiative for World Car Free Day by encouraging its employees to travel car free to work on the 22nd of September.

Rise is a leading health and wellbeing charity in the North East. They work closely with partners in sectors such as health, education, transport and more – to show how movement and physical activity can tackle inequalities and help solve some of the biggest issues affecting our communities.

Rise fully embraces the ethos of World Car Free Day. Their work focuses on encouraging the use of active travel to improve mental and physical health outcomes and reduce carbon emissions. This strongly aligns with the aims of World Free Day.

Recyke y’bike is a charity in Newcastle that specialises in refurbishing donated bikes and selling them at reasonable prices. They’ve been established since 2006 and generate the majority of income through sales of refurbished bikes and servicing bikes.

Every year they give away hundreds of bikes to referred individuals and deliver a number of free bike maintenance workshops to different groups of people. They are excited to support World Car Free Day by running a second hand bike workshop and bike repair and maintenance sessions at the Civic Centre.

Living Streets is the national charity for walking with a mission to achieve a better walking environment and inspire people to walk and wheel more.  

At Living Streets, they work with Schools across the city to promote Active Travel and on the 22nd September they’ll be doing just that. 

Mobilityways is proud to be supporting World Car Free Day by offering a facility to create personalised travel plans showcasing viable sustainable travel options for either regular or one-off trips being made from your home.

Mobilityways is a leader in transport decarbonisation and the leader in tackling commuting emissions. The work they undertake to personalise sustainable commuting choices centres on showcasing the savings in cost and carbon that are possible from using one’s own car less.
