What is World Car Free Day?

World Car Free Day is celebrated each year on 22 September and encourages people to choose sustainable altenatives to cars, such as walking, wheeling, cycling or public transport.

The day aims to raise awareness of the environmental, health and social benefits of reducing car use. Helping to cut air pollution, lower carbon emissions , and create safer streets.

Communities around the world mark the occasion with events and activities that promote greener and more active ways of travelling.

Prominent landmarks include the Tyne Bridge, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the Sage Gateshead on the quayside. Dense urban development, residential neighbourhoods, roads, and large green open spaces extend across the landscape under a clear blue sky.

Why Go Car Free?

Breathe Easier. Feel Better. Reconnect.

By leaving the car behind, you are doing more than cutting emissions. You’re boosting your health, saving money, and reducing congestion. Newcastle is coming together – institutions, businesses, schools, and families to take a step (or pedal) in the right direction.

  • Improve heart health
  • Feel more energised
  • Save on fuel and parking
  • Reduce air pollution
  • Connect with Newcastle in a new way
